Scientists who have stayed at the Southwest Research Station dream of retiring to Portal.  Astronomers value Portal for what it lacks: clouds and light pollution, as dark night skies are protected by forward-thinking county ordinances.  And we all love the climate: mild flannel-shirt winters,  dramatic t-shirt summers when baking June heat breaks suddenly into wild monsoons in July that bring the earth back to life.

We first stopped here on our camping honeymoon, and twenty years later we retired to Portal after careers in wildlife biology and conservation. We love this corner of Cochise County for its biodiversity. The plant and animal communities are special, as well as its human community.
